A Brief History of the Church of St Mary Magdalene
The Brass of Thomas de Stapel
Thomas de Stapel is one of the most famous individuals of Shopland. He was the Serjeant at Arms to King Edward 111 and his brass is one of three in the country and held as the most valuable. He was interred within the footprint of St Mary Magdalene Church behind the Font.
Thomas de Stapel, (former resident at Shopland Hall) died on 3rd March 1371/2 fighting at Crecy and Poitiers whilst protecting the King.
